Family Easter Walks

This is a blog about when a family Easter walk turns into a teaching moment.

Yesterday I went on a walk with my family including my two cousins who are very reluctant walkers, they have got a lot better at doing walks since getting a dog of their own.

The girls who are 10 and 8 quickly start walking with me so both of my hands are full as they are swinging my arms as we walk. Due to the girls not enjoying adult conversation I start reciting the story ‘we are going on a bear hunt’ which both me and the girls know off by heart.

Once we have completed are very enthusiastic rendition of ‘we are going on a bear hunt’ the eldest of the two sisters asks if we can go on a wolf hunt and so we do, as we are walking we start describing the different obstacles we face. The girls took their ideas from the environment we were in, they started describing what they could see, hear and what it felt like to be walking through the different areas.

We came across a gate and the girls put it into the story and we stopped and listened to the sound the gate made when it was opened and closed, as well of describing how it looked.

Then we had to describe how we would find the wolf and we used our imagination to help us describe what this wolf may look like and how it might case after us.

The other walkers passing by must has thought we were crazy, but I saw how the outdoors could help my cousins imagination and creativity, and how if they were to do this in school, they would make one fantastic story that any teacher would love to read.

I think what you may say is looking back on me playing around with my cousins and keeping them entertained how me, how beneficial the outdoors and experiences are to support children in their learning, imagination and creativity. But most of all it was FUN!
