A Journey into Space!

In Science this week we were tasked to create a presentation to our peers on a topic of our choosing to show our subject knoweldge and share some lesson ideas with our class. My group decided that wew would explore the topic of space which lies in the Year 5 section of the National Curriculum.

Our journey started with a ride in a spaceship with a very hungry dinosaur!

The story of the Dinosaur that pooded a Planet allowed us to introduce the topic of space in a fun and intresting way.

As well as allowing us to see if anyone had any prior knowledge and misconceptions about space that we could adress before starting the topic.

The book may lead children to belive that the moon is really made of cheese as our hungry dinosaur eats the moon.

This story will also spark discussion in the class about what there is in space how they get there and they children will have questions that you can explore within the topic.

We showed our peers how you can use the book to create a concept cartoon which is anouther way of assessing the childrens prior knowledge and helping to address misconceptions.

We used a picture from the book to create this conept cartoon on gravity.

There are many parts of the book you could use.

This will allow you to understand what level of understanding the children have about gravity in space.

We then showed our peers that the book could lend itself to a few diffrent topics covered in the Year 5 science currilum.

The first we focused on was rockets and how we could inform the children about rockets and how they get to space as well as some exciting experiences the children can carry out.

We suggested that the they could explore Tim Peak's journey into to space and how the rocket was made.

We decided to show our peers an experment they could carry out to promote the childrens working sceintifically skills. We made Alka- Seltzer rockets and carried out an expeiment of how high the rockets went with the diffrent amounts of water, we then recored the information and discussed how this can be realted to fueling a real rocket.

The other acitivties carried out were another expeince on gravity, and creative activity to order the planet and to explore how the Sun, Earth and the Moon roate.
