Autism Friendly Day
This Christmas I am being a Christmas Elf at Barton Grange Garden Centre and a opportunity came up to take part in a Autism Friendly Day. I deiced too use this opportunity to expand my knowledge and experience with children and young adults with Autism as well as other disabilities. We were supported by a charity called OJ's which provides activities for children with autism, learning difficulties and associated disorders as well as supporting the families.
If you want to learn more about the charity here is a link to the website: http://www.ojscare.com/

OJ's was able to provide me with a insight to how to help support children and young adults with Autism. During the day they helped us by talking to the parents and carers and finding out information that we needed to ensure that the visit to the grotto went as smoothly as possible. They gave us information like if the child is verbal if they don't like loud noises and what might distract them. This was very helpful for the elves and Father Christmas, as it helped us to fully cater for the needs of the visitors to the grotto.
This was a great experience for me as now I have been able to have further insight into how I can support these children and young adults appropriately. This will help to support my professional development and I believe that I will be able to cater to children's indivudal needs.
