Half Term Homework
This October half term I was lucky enough to look after my cousins. Eleanor the eldest of the two girls had to do some homework on Clitheroe Castle, for a presentation she had to give in class.
So we decided to do some research before going to visit the Castle. Eleanor and myself did the research on the laptop and found some interesting facts that she put in her own words ready to video when we go to Clitheroe.
Once we were there we practised what she had to say then we video parts to put together when we got back. Eleanor chose where she wanted to say each part then she went round taking pictures to go in the video.
When we go back we put it all together on movie maker.
The whole experience gave me some ideas for my own teaching practice. In university at the moment we have been looking at Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC). Which is what our trip to Clitheroe with my cousins was. It had all the elements that LOtC should, and it was very engaging and supported Eleanor learning and development.
In my own practice I could replicate this trip, I can link it in with history and studying the Normans or the history of castles and do a project on several local castles or landmarks. We then would research before we went on the trip and the children can work in groups to create a project and write a script, which links into English. One child could be the camera man, another the producer and then one could be the presenter. This would encourage children to work well as a team and support their social skills as well as aiding their academic development. Once they return to class they can then produce the imovies which they can show to the rest of the class, this links into computing.
Overall, I have been able to the potential of a LOtC experience similar to the one I did with my cousins.
Here is the finished product...
